Life at ISP

Elementary Life (PK3–Grade 5)

Welcome to the Elementary School at ISP!

Our primary mission is to meet the unique educational, emotional, and social needs of each and every student who walks through our doors. We accomplish this by providing a rich, holistic experience in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. All of the staff members at ISP share a common goal – and that is to do whatever it takes to help our students reach their full potential as learners and as global citizens. We recognize that education is a complex, dynamic process, and we constantly evaluate our practice to ensure that students are engaged, that they are appropriately challenged, and that they experience joy in learning.

We offer a research-based curriculum that emphasizes a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy as well as critical thinking, citizenship, and ample opportunities for creative expression. Our whole-child approach includes challenging social studies, science, and math programs. Students stay fit and healthy in our physical education classes, they experience art and music in our enrichment classes, they get hands-on access to technology in our computer classes, and they learn to appreciate literature through frequent visits to our comprehensive library. Students are also exposed to daily Spanish classes to either introduce them to the language, or expand their Spanish language abilities as needed. In addition to these special enrichment classes, our students are engaged in the social emotional realm as they have set aside, weekly classroom visits and lessons from their grade level counselor. At ISP, we believe that life-long learning is critical for everyone. Our early release time on Wednesdays is devoted to professional development activities designed to continually improve our services to students and families. Education is not static, and our staff understands the importance of keeping up with the latest research regarding effective educational practices.

The international population at ISP is one of our most treasured resources. Every day, students have opportunities to learn from one another and develop an appreciation for the differences that make our school unique. The language of instruction is English, and students who do not speak English as their first language receive additional support through an inclusion model provided in their regular classes. This promotes social integration and provides more connection to the larger classroom community. At ISP, we believe that learning should be fun. We want our students to develop a sense of place in order to appreciate the world that surrounds them. Active, hands-on experiences provide relevance and help students make connections between the classroom and the larger environment.

The beautiful country of Panama is a perfect backdrop for authentic learning. A small sample of our enrichment experiences includes: field trips to the canal and the rainforest, United Nations Day celebration, Mes de la Patria, Bringing Literature to Life day, and so much more! If I had to describe the ISP Elementary School in one word, it would be "community." We are a group of students, parents, and educators working together to achieve positive outcomes for our kids.

Welcome to our school!

Our Mission

Our mission is to meet the unique educational, emotional, and social needs of each and every student who walks through our doors. We accomplish this by providing a rich, holistic experience in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility.

All of the staff members at ISP share a common goal—to do whatever it takes to help our students reach their full potential as learners and as global citizens.

Curriculum

We offer a research-based curriculum emphasizing a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy as well as critical thinking, citizenship, and ample opportunities for creative expression. Our whole-child approach includes challenging social studies, science, and math programs. Students stay fit and healthy in our physical education classes, and they experience art and music in our enrichment classes. Elementary students get hands-on access to technology in our computer classes, and they learn to appreciate literature through frequent visits to our comprehensive library.

Curriculum for the core subjects is based on U.S. and Internationally recognized standards and programs.

Literacy: Daily instruction in literacy emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Our curriculum is organized around thematic units and grounded in the Common Core Standards (CCS). The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful.

Math: At the International School of Panama, Investigations developed by TERC: Technical Education Research Center is the foundation of the daily instruction. ISP follows the Common Core Standards, and these drive learning outcomes at each grade level. The use of manipulatives and hands-on activities serve to develop a concrete understanding of mathematics and lead to abstract thinking abilities in upper elementary.

Science and Social Studies: ISP has developed thematic units in both science and social studies that are based on rigorous curriculum standards. Students study three different topics in each subject over the course of the year. Each topic exposes students to core content knowledge while emphasizing critical thinking and inquiry.

Hands-On Learning

At ISP, we believe that learning should be fun. We want our students to develop a sense of place in order to appreciate the world that surrounds them. Some of our enrichment experiences include field trips to the canal and the rainforest, United Nations Day celebration, Mes de la Patria, Bringing Literature to Life day, and so much more!
