Life at ISP

Middle School Life (Grades 6–8)

Welcome to ISP Middle School!

As the ISP Middle School Principal it is my privilege to work with a dedicated and committed team of professionals. The teachers in Middle School understand and care about students in this particular age group, and that makes us all very lucky. We are fortunate to share the experience of living, learning, and growing together.

Middle school is the transition between elementary and high school. At the International School of Panama, our approach to working with adolescents is based on the National Middle School Association’s "This We Believe" characteristics.

  • High expectations for all members of the learning community
  • Students and teachers engaged in active learning
  • Curriculum that is relevant, challenging, integrative, and exploratory
  • Multiple learning and teaching approaches that respond to their diversity

Our goal is to support students by understanding the developmental needs of adolescents. Our approach to teaching and learning is collaborative and inclusive. Students participate actively in the learning process and work to develop independence, responsibility, and accountability for their learning. Research shows that when adolescents connect their own effort with positive results they become more empowered as learners. Parents are important partners in this process.

Our Advisory program is a cornerstone of our middle school. Our program includes discussions which reinforce good decision making, dealing with peer conflict and peer pressure, teaching and reinforcing organization skills, birthday celebrations, and Friday Fun activities during which students engage in fun, team-building games.

Student leadership is promoted through Middle School Leadership Team and a wide variety of clubs. Our busy students are also involved in sports, drama, and music. Our middle school soccer, basketball, swim, and track and field teams participate in games and tournaments with local, private schools. Our music students perform on numerous occasions for school activities and events with other schools as well. After-school activities are geared towards building skills in sports, drama, and music, as well as other special interests.

The middle school team affirms our commitment to quality education and attention to your children. You are an important part of the team, and we would like you to contact us at any time if you have questions or suggestions. We encourage you to use e-mail and Canvas as a quick and efficient method for getting in touch with teachers. You may also call the office at any time to set up an appointment with the teachers.

From our Counselor - Jennifer Restrepo: The role of a Middle School teacher is an important one during this developmental stage. Through our advisory program and our classes we work to emphasize positive messages about self-esteem and peer relationships. Our goal is to prevent incidents of isolation, exclusion, and bullying by empowering students to advocate for themselves and others in order to create a healthy school environment for all.

This year we will work specifically on five themes:

  • Empathy and Communication
  • Bullying Prevention
  • Emotion Management
  • Problem Solving and Goal Setting
  • Substance Abuse and Prevention

Advisory program. As a cornerstone of our educational philosophy, the advisory program includes discussions that reinforce good decision making, dealing with peer conflict and peer pressure, teaching and reinforcing organization skills, birthday celebrations, and Friday Fun activities where students engage in fun, team-building games.

Student leadership. We offer our students the opportunity to serve as leaders by participating on our Leadership Team as well as through involvement in sports, drama, and music.
