IB Mathematical Studies
Course Description
Grade(s): 11-12 Level: IB SL Credit(s): 2 in Mathematics
Prerequisite (s): Algebra II/Trigonometry
To enroll in IB Math Studies SL it is recommended that candidates have a grade of at least a C in Algebra II/Trigonometry.
This two-year program is designed to provide a mathematics course for students
with varied backgrounds and abilities in math. The skills needed to cope with
the mathematical demands of a technological society are
developed and emphasis is placed on the application of mathematics to real-life
situations. A substantial piece of personal research is a requirement of this
program. Students likely to need mathematics for the pursuit of further
study in math, science, or computer fields are advised to consider IB
Mathematics HL. The IB Math Studies course covers numerous topics including:
functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, numerical), computation
(approximation and error), data analysis (statistics and probabilities),
business techniques (linear programming, simple sequence and finance), Geometry
(vectors) and Trigonometry (basic functions and rules).
