IB English - A2

Course Description

Grade(s): 11&12                        Level: IB SL or HL                        Credit(s): 2 in English

Prerequisite(s):  Teacher recommendation and successful completion of English 10 with a minimum B average.  

This course is recommended for students who are non-native English speakers but who have a high level of competency in English.  Students in this course should be beyond the foreign learner stage, Whilst not being considered native speakers of English.

The International Baccalaureate A2 English course is designed to accommodate the needs of students who possess competent oral skills but who wish to improve them, and who require specific help with college level writing skills.  Students in this class should be highly motivated.  The focus of this course is the study of literature, language, culture, media and contemporary issues to learn effective writing styles and rhetoric as models for students' writing and oral assignments; however, the evaluation standards consider that students are not native English speakers.  The goal for English A2 is to foster a critical mind capable of speaking and writing succinctly and analytically in English.  Units may include study of future issues, global issues, media and culture, language and culture, social issues , and thematic study of literature. Some written tasks and the IB examinations at the end of the second year will be assessed by external IB evaluators.  Students are also required to complete two oral assignments, which will be assessed by the instructor and moderated by external IB evaluators.
