IB History
Course Description
Grade(s): 11-12 Level: IB HL or SL Credit(s): 2 in Social Studies
Prerequisite(s): Social Studies grades 11-12
This is a two-year course, which meets the requirements for both Standard and Higher level IB History.
Students will develop and master analytical , research and writing skills while studying the history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course is organized into five major areas that coincide with IB assessments:
(1) learning to interpret and evaluate primary source information pertaining to the Cold War, Russian Revolution and Chinese Revolution;
(2) the origins and development of the Cold War as an international system;
(3) the rise and rule of single party states (Russia/USSR, China, Germany, Cuba);
(4) an in depth study of Europe or the Americas in the nineteenth century leading up to World War I; and
(5) developing a historical question to evaluate and formulate analysis and conclusions through in - depth research.
The research paper (item 5) will be drafted in the second semester of the first year. It will be finalized in the first bimester of the second year.
If time permits, an additional topic will be studied. This will be Causes, Practices and Effects of War or The Evolution of International Organizations.
