IB Mathematics Studies

Course Description

Grade(s): 11-12                        Level: IB SL                        Credit(s): 2 in Mathematics

Prerequisite(s): Algebra II/Trigonometry

To have the best chance of success in IB Math Studies SL it is recommended that candidates have a grade of at least a "C" in Algebra II / Trig.

This two year program is designed to provide a realistic mathematics course for students with varied backgrounds and abilities in math. The skills needed to cope with the mathematical demands of a technological society are developed and emphasis is placed on the application of mathematics to real-life situations. A substantial piece of personal research, in the form of a project, is a requirement of this program. However, students likely to need mathematics for the pursuit of further study in math, science, or computer fields are advised to consider IB math methods or IB higher level math. This course, IB Mathematical studies SL, covers numerous topics including, functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, numerical), computation (approximation and error), data analysis (statistics and probabilities), business techniques (linear programming, simple sequence and finance), geometry (vectors), and trigonometry (basic functions and rules)
