IB Spanish - A2 (Language/Literature)
Course Description
Grade(s): 11-12 Level: IB SL or HL Credit(s): 2 in Spanish
Prerequisite(s): Teacher Recommendation and successful completion of Spanish 10 with a minimum B Average
This course is designed for first language speakers of Spanish, or those
students who have reached proficiency, despite the fact that Spanish is not
their first language.
Spanish A1 is designed to promote the richness and subtleties of the Spanish
language in order to develop linguistic competence and foster clear and concise
oral discourse and effective writing skills. The course will also
highlight the values of literature, as well as its contribution to knowledge
about other cultures and societies. Students will read, analyze and report on a
variety of literary texts which will provide practice in perceiving a wider
scope of human thought. The International Baccalaureate Spanish Language A1
course offers students the opportunity to read and analyze literature critically
in every genre, from a variety of cultures and periods in literary
history. Students who take this course must be interested in reading, as the the
course syllabus is comprised of fifteen different works of literature, each of
which must be interpreted critically. Two major formal writing
assignments, the literary commentary and the comparative essay, will be assessed
by external IB examiners. Students are also required to complete five oral
assignments, which will be assessed by the instructor and
moderated by external IB examiners. To receive the IB certificate the IB
diploma, students will be required to write a four hour IB examination at the
end of the second year. All IB exams are evaluated by external examiners.
