Over the last 2 years the Elementary School Student Representative Council (SRC) have been working to replace the play structure in the ES playground. They have received ideas from all of the ES students, met with vendors, drawn up plans and then revised and repeated the process to arrive at a final design.
Over the summer break, the old structure has been removed and the new one installed. This week students have been getting to explore the new space and try some things out. Next week, we will formally open the new play structure.
The importance of play to children’s physical and social development has been highlighted in recent research and last year we changed the elementary school schedule to include more time for play both in the mornings and at lunchtime. Free play is an integral part of children’s development and the new structure allows for much greater gross motor skill development as well as offering a less structured play experience.
