Just after Spring Break/Semana Santa elementary parents at ISP were sent a message from ISP Communications about a new project the elementary and high school were collaborating on. Elementary parents who wished, could sign their children up for the HS-ES Linkage Program to match up with a high school student that could volunteer to connect remotely with their child and read them stories, have fun conversations, or even help them with schoolwork. With the help of the PTA advertising it, our inaugural group of 38 families, representing 50 elementary students were paired with 32 high school volunteers. The students were then given an orientation and ground rules, given some tips on working with younger children, and the parents' emails were then shared with them. The goal of the program is three fold: 1. create bonds between younger and older students at ISP that can be continued once we resume in person schooling, 2. Give younger students more access to English language conversation, and 3. Allow for older students to contribute to the ISP community by providing a valuable service. Students in grade 11 can also qualify for MEDUCA hours, if they are supervised by Ms. Arango during their interactions.
