As part of the social-emotional development of students, our Middle School Counselor, Jennifer Restrepo, started a weekly meeting with girls from the 6th grade. These students are part of a group that will follow a counseling curriculum called: Girls in Real-Life Situations (G.I.R.L.S), which is designed to give girls the opportunity to feel empowered, gain self-awareness, develop positive coping mechanisms, improve daily problem-solving skills, feel connected with other girls, and make healthy decisions as they grow through turbulent times.
Students have reflected on the experience, with one member writing that it’s a great place where”girls can be girls.” Another student added that “it’s fun and it’s a good way to express your feelings...it’s cool and it’s relatable.”
Group meetings will take place every friday during lunch, and we are looking into the possibility of having more of these groups during the week.
